Summer 2004

6th-Grade Graduation, June

On June 23rd, my elementary school held a graduation ceremony for 6th graders. The principal gave a speech, we watched a slide presentation about the year, and then we all walked up to the principal and received a graduation certificate. Mom, Dad, Jan and Sofia all came.

Afterward, we had cake and punch, and my friends and I gathered for some photos.  [At right are Kyler Blue, me, Robby Ryan, and Dennis Smirnov.  Below are Dustin Glassmoyer, Anita Dukart, Trevor Partington, me, Alana Saunders, Natasha Borgen, Kristen O'Neill, Jordon Roush, and Claire Saunders.]

Of the 28 kids in my Quest class, 11 will go to my junior high next year.  The rest will disperse to other schools. Most of us have been in the same classroom all six years, so it will be really different to start next year with a new group of kids.

The end of school was exciting, a little scary, and sad. But now I'm ready for junior high!

Family Camping Trip, June

After school was out, Mom, Jan, Sofia, and I went on a week-long camping trip down the Oregon Coast in our RV.  We stayed overnight at three Oregon state parks: Fort Stevens, near Astoria, Cape Lookout, near Tillamook, and Beverly Beach, south of Depoe Bay.

The campsite I liked the best was Fort Stevens because it has a nice freshwater lake, where I went swimming. We also walked to the sandy beach; Mom and I biked a lot of paved trails; and we explored the historic war barracks and fort museum.

The things I liked best on this vacation were roasting marshmallows and making s'mores.  I also found out that I like banana boats: bananas with chocolate and marshmallows inside that you heat over the fire to make everything melted and gooey. Mom bought me a book of ghost stories and I told them around the fire. At Beverly Beach we flew a trick kite [above], which was also a lot of fun.

Traveling with Sofia was entertaining because she smiles a lot.  She slept pretty well most of the way and didn't wake me up at night.

The last day of our trip we stopped at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, where I saw Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose.  It's the biggest plane in the world but flew only once, for 1 minute. I was able to go inside the gigantic plane, but there wasn't much to see.  Still, it was a pretty nice museum, with many other planes and helicopters.

Fourth of July Parade

For the Fourth of July, I played my trumpet with the Mills Music Marching Band in the Bothell parade. We practiced two times a week during the whole month of June; we not only had to learn the music but also to march in formation and perform a group hat trick.

We played Louis Louis, You're a Grand Old Flag, Mickey Mouse March, and Tequila. Even though being in the parade meant that I didn't get to see much of the rest of it, I still had a blast waving to the people in the crowd, who were giving us lots of applause.

Summer Camps

I wouldn't call this summer relaxing, but I would call it really fun. After our family trip down the Oregon Coast, I spent a week in Boys & Girls Club basketball camp.

The following week I went away to camp for the first time. The camp was called "Extreme Week," sponsored by Summer Adventures Day Camp. The first day we flew a 172 Cessna [left], including taking off and landing (I had 20 minutes flying time without help) out of Paine Field. The second day we went river rafting on the Wenatchee River [below, with me up front]. The third day we hiked and played at our campsite in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The fourth day we spent at Silverwood Theme Park in Coeur d'Alene, and the fifth day we went to Wild Waters Waterslide Park in Coeur d'Alene. The last day we drove home...exhausted.  What a blast!!

The following week I spent playing flag football with Skyhawks.  I was the oldest one there, but I still had a good time.  Next I spent a week playing tennis (through Kirkland Parks and Rec). I'd never played before, but I liked it and want to play again next summer.

Next I flew to Idaho to spend a week with Grandpa Bob and Nana and all my Idaho relatives.  I had a great time swimming, fishing, caddying for Grandpa Bob (driving a golf cart!), and beating the pants off Grandpa in Texas Hold 'Em. Then Dad, Suzy, and Brennan picked me up in our RV for another week of camping.

My last week before school, I need some rest, but instead, I'm starting five nights of football practice!
