March 2002, Paris and the Loire Valley, France

This was our second visit to Paris together.  Having seen many of the most obvious sights during our first trip in March 1999, this time we sought out other, less obvious Parisian sights, and also traveled outside the city.  It was difficult to decide where to go outside Paris: north, south, east, west? But we finally set our plans on the Loire Valley and its historic, romantic castles.

While in Paris, we were fortunate to be able to stay in the apartment of our friend Patrick Questembert, a comfortable fifth-floor suite very near the Arc de Triomphe. We are very grateful for his hospitality. We were also fortunate to enjoy sun and blue skies our entire visit!  Not so fortunate was Jan's mishap at Notre Dame that necessitated a visit to the nearby emergency room. But despite his accidental attempt to smuggle a small shard of the Cathedral out of France in his hand, we managed to have a busy, romantic, thoroughly successful and enjoyable vacation.
