New Year's Preparations

We left home on December 26th and arrived in Vlissingen on the 27th. The few days before New Year's were spent visiting with family—eating, sitting, talking; sitting, talking and eating; talking, eating, and sitting.  Even though Jan's nephews don't speak much English (some are just old enough to start learning in school) and Cameron doesn't speak much Dutch (he can count to 100), they were able to find ways to communicate enough to play games with one another, including wrestling, basketball, and checkers.

One highlight of the week was visiting our new friend Bep Vermue, who visited us with Jan's mother for Thanksgiving 2002. She lives in Goes in a spacious condo on a canal, and she gave us a very nice lunch (more eating, sitting, and talking).

Another highlight of the week was shopping for New Year's fireworks. We visited numerous stores to scope out the selection, and Cameron and Jan carefully planned a 60-euro display [right].

Yet another highlight of the week was dinner at the Hotel Piccard in Vlissingen.  The entire family attended, making a group of 18. The nine kids were able to play in the hotel's swimming pool for an hour before dinner and again afterwards [right and below]. Dinner was a multi-course, all-you-can eat buffet, and the kids especially enjoyed going back and forth numerous times for their favorites. After dinner, Jan and Amy and some of the other adults even danced to live music—a country/western singer! It was a very successful evening.
